Do you suffer from an itchy scalp?
WHAT IS SCALP IRRITATION?
Suffering with an itchy scalp, or scalp pruritus, is a problem that affects many adults and children in the UK. It can be very frustrating with symptoms such as frequent scratching and discomfort. Occasionally, an itchy scalp is accompanied by visible signs, such as scabbed or flaking skin which can cause embarrassment, especially when wearing dark clothes! Other times, your scalp can itch without any skin changes.
An itchy scalp may not be classed as anything that will typically indicate anything serious, there could be an underlying condition that is causing the scalp to be irritated.
WHAT CAUSES AN ITCHY SCALP?
DANDRUFF
The most common cause of an itchy scalp is seborrheic dermatitis, or dandruff. What causes dandruff is a yeastlike fungus (malassezia) that feeds on oils on the scalps of most adults. Sensitivity to hair care products (contact dermatitis), and other skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema can cause dandruff. The sebaceous or oil-secreting glands in the scalp become inflamed, you can experience itching, flaking. reddened skin, yellow or white scales.
WHAT CAUSES DANDRUFF?
While its unknown exactly what causes dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, some potential causes include a yeast overgrowth on the skin, seasonal changes, hormonal fluctuations or stress. An itchy scalp may simply be the result of a sensitive scalp. However, it can also indicate an underlying medical condition.
There is a range of other medical conditions that can cause an itchy scalp, for instance diabetes, anxiety, scalp psoriasis, so it is important to talk to your doctor if you suffer from any of these conditions. But there is another solution which is not just a relief from an irritated scalp, but gives a huge boost to the quality and fullness of the hair.
