UNDERSTANDING ACNE
Treatments for Acne & Acne Scarring
Acne is caused by three things: excessive sebum, bacterial infection and inflammation of the skin.
A multitude of factors contribute to breakouts – sun, pollution, weather, diet, hydration, hormones and genetic predisposition.
Skincare is a great first step. Cosmeceutical products use precise chemical formulations based on extensive dermatological biochemistry and the highest-grade ingredients. But for persistent or scarring acne, clinical treatments can make a transformative difference.
There are a range of facial rejuvenation treatments that can help with acne breakouts and scarring, depending on your skin type and severity – including HydraFacial®, Skin Peels, Microneedling, and Dermalux® – or a combination approach for the best results.

acne-causing bacteria. A course of 6 weekly sessions is recommended for acne scarring.

COMMON QUESTIONS
FAQ
-
HydraFacial effectively treats acne by deeply cleansing, exfoliating, and removing oil, dead skin cells, and impurities that clog pores. Its salicylic acid booster targets acne-causing bacteria, while gentle suction clears pores without irritation. The treatment hydrates, soothes redness, and calms inflammation, promoting cell turnover and balancing oil production. A course of 6 weekly sessions is recommended. Note: we cannot treat cystic acne — wait until breakouts have settled.
-
Yes! Superficial Peels help with mild acne scarring by exfoliating dead skin cells, removing excess oil, and unclogging pores. Ingredients like salicylic and glycolic acid target acne-causing bacteria, reduce inflammation, and promote cell turnover. The Perfect Peel works internally to repair and nourish the skin, refine pores, reduce hyperpigmentation and diminish acne marks.
-
The needles create very superficial "micro-injuries" to the outermost layer of skin, inducing the healing response, which prompts the skin to repair itself by producing new collagen and elastin. This leads to a reduction in acne scarring visibility, particularly with repeat treatments. Microneedling can reduce acne scarring by 50 – 70%.
-
The best treatment for severe acne often involves a combination approach, tailored to your specific skin condition and type of acne. You may be recommended prescription medications such as oral antibiotics to reduce inflammation. It's essential to follow a consistent skincare routine including gentle cleansing and moisturising. At your consultation, we will discuss your skincare routine and treatments to help reduce acne outbreaks and scarring.
-
Whether you choose a medium-depth skin peel like The Perfect Peel or a course of microneedling treatments, once your skin has recovered (7 – 14 days), you will likely see a visible reduction in scarring. Repeat treatments at 6 – 12 months will further fade more stubborn scarring. Your nurse practitioner will discuss expected outcomes at your consultation.

SW Skincare products are our own highly effective, affordable, clinically validated range that deliver real improvements to the skin. A simple system divided into three areas: Prepare, Protect and Prevent. Using one product from each section is often all that's required. For more advanced acne, we recommend either SkinBetter or Obagi skincare.
