Why is there a rise in demand for men seeking cosmetic treatments?

OVER THE PAST YEAR, AESTHETICS CLINICS IN THE UK HAVE SEEN A RAPIDLY INCREASING DEMAND FOR MEN SEEKING COSMETIC TREATMENTS.

It has been widely thought that women lead and dominate the cosmetic treatment industry, with a more mainstream view on acceptance of such treatments due to social media and reality TV ‘normalising’ the cosmetic treatments such as line and wrinkle reduction Botox, fillers, skin tightening and fat freezing.

There has been a massive cultural shift towards more emotional empathy in men, with media openly discussing everything from male suicide, men showing emotion, to the body positivity movement. With more public and social acceptance, men’s attitudes around their looks, self-esteem, personal hygiene and grooming have transformed.

Figures suggested by some Harley Street non-surgical aesthetic clinics are that their male client base has doubled since 2020, with treatments focussing on hair loss, anti-wrinkle, the periocular area (around the eye) or jawline.

WHY ARE MEN’S COSMETICS TREATMENTS NOT AS HEAVILY PROMOTED AS TREATMENTS TARGETED AT WOMEN?

Up until around 2020, there was a huge stigma around men and the beauty industry, feeling they can’t discuss their personal insecurities or show a lack of self esteem, however, this is all changing, men are interested in looking after themselves and want to look and feel good through the use of good skincare routines and cosmetic treatments.

Career confidence is a really real thing for men who feel they are losing ground to the younger, fitter, more confident generation of employees. For many men in their late forties and fifties may have more experience, but a lack of energy and self confidence can create a huge amount of fear of being phased out of the market. Cosmetic treatments in men of this age and demographic are a large proportion of the clients coming to the clinic for cosmetic treatments.

At the Springwell Clinic in Marlow, we have seen the percentage of men interested in and opting for non-surgical cosmetic procedures almost doubling since Covid restrictions were lifted. Treatments that reduce the signs of ageing, quality of the skin and skincare routines in general that help maintain a youthful appearance are the most popular.
