Top 10 Anti-Ageing Aesthetic Treatments for Men

MEN’S AESTHETICS IS A BOOMING INDUSTRY IN THE UK EXPERIENCING A 70% RISE IN MEN’S AESTHETIC TREATMENTS SINCE 2021 (ACCORDING TO THE BRITISH COLLEGE OF AESTHETIC MEDICINE).

There are many reasons why men would turn to medical aesthetics ‘tweakments’ and enhancements, and with so many more treatments available at our clinics, where non-invasive is key, men are made to feel welcome. Mental health issues are a common problem with men who are lacking in self-confidence over their looks, whether it is linked with career progression, celebrity influence or anti-ageing.

Aesthetic treatments are essentially designed to slow down or reverse the ageing process, and whether you are man or woman, this is the overall desired outcome. So we have the same goals, but is the procedure the same for both men and women?

HOW MEN’S SKIN AGES DIFFERENTLY TO WOMEN’S

Men have thicker skin

Most significantly, the skin on men is around 20-25% thicker than women’s, mainly due to the effects of testosterone. With this added thickness, men will develop wrinkles later than women, and when they do, they appear deeper and more pronounced.

Higher Collagen and Elastin Levels

Men typically have higher collagen density in their skin than women. Collagen and elastin are the two proteins that are responsible for skin’s firmness and elasticity. While women will lose collagen more rapidly after menopause, men are lucky to experience a more gradual decline. However, that’s not to say they are let off easily. Men will obviously age at different stages, depending on their lifestyle, weight etc., and their skin can become saggy and lose volume, particularly around the eyes, jawline, and neck.

Facial Hair

More hair on your face does actually add another layer of protection against sun damage, therefore slowing down the anti-ageing process. Shaving also helps exfoliate dead skin cells, and help skin rejuvenation, but constant shaving can also cause irritation and damage to the skin over time. Issues such as razor bumps, ingrown hairs, and cuts can inflame the skin, which in turn can speed up aging.

Increased Sebum Production

Men have more active sebaceous glands, leading to oilier skin than women. Why is it that men’s skin often looks so good? Well this is due to the resilient skin barrier that helps keep moisture in, which can delay signs of ageing such as dryness and fine lines. However, if there is an imbalance of excess oil production, this can have the opposite effect and lead to other issues, such as acne, with breakouts even through to adulthood.

Hormonal effects on ageing

Here is another difference between men and women that affects the ageing of our skin. Men have a more consistent level of hormones throughout their lives, whereas women experience significant hormonal fluctuations, especially during menopause. This hormonal stability in men means a slower ageing process but doesn’t prevent it altogether, merely slows it down. Eventually, testosterone levels will decline, resulting in thinner skin, reduced elasticity, and a more tired facial appearance, but this is typically later than women.

Having looked at the differences, what are the best anti-ageing aesthetic treatments for men that both address their specific needs, including deeper wrinkles, sagging skin, and maintaining collagen density, but that ultimately satisfies mens desire to look and feel good in today’s world.

1 : BOTULINUM TOXIN (BOTOX)

Botulinum Toxin, or ‘Brotox’ as it is commonly known in the men’s aesthetics world, is one of the most popular anti-ageing wrinkle reduction treatments for men at our clinic in Marlow. This is due mainly to its ability to smooth out dynamic wrinkles, as previously mentioned, men typically have stronger facial muscles than women, leading to more pronounced expression lines, so wrinkles tend to be deeper and more defined than women’s, so require the procedure and technique of the Botulinum Toxin treatment to give the desired effect.

Applied in particular on the forehead and around the eyes, Botox works by relaxing these muscles, and softening the lines without making the face look frozen. The slight difference is the Botulinum Toxin is administered in smaller doses with a focus on more natural looking appearance, as overly smooth skin can look unnatural on a man’s face.

Key areas treated in men: Forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines (glabellar lines).

2 : DERMAL FILLERS

Dermal fillers, which are typically made from hyaluronic acid, help restore lost volume, giving the face a more youthful, refreshed look. As men age, they lose volume in the cheeks, temples, and under the eyes, leading to a hollow, tired appearance. A more subtle administration of dermal filler is adopted to maintain the masculine facial features, preferring a stronger, more defined jawline and less rounding and volume in the cheeks compared to that of women who go for the lifting look.

Key areas treated for men: Nasolabial folds, tear troughs (under-eye hollows), and jawline enhancement.

3 : CHEMICAL PEELS

Chemical peels are a brilliant treatment for the thicker, oilier skin, particularly if the skin is over producing sebum and causing breakouts. Chemical peels remove the outer layer of dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage and acne. Men’s skin can generally tolerate stronger peels, making medium-depth or even deep peels a viable option for more dramatic results. The Perfect Peel is an ideal treatment for men looking to improve the quality of their skin. Containing a blend of ingredients that can help with a variety of skin concerns, including hyperpigmentation, acne scars, fine lines, and uneven texture in men.

Key areas treated: Face exfoliation and resurfacing.

4 : MICRONEEDLING

Microneedling is a highly effective procedure for boosting collagen production. The process involves using tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body’s natural healing response. A course of Microneedling is often recommended to treat men suffering from acne scarring due to it’s penetration deeper into the cellular layers.

Key areas treated: Face rejuvenation.

Radiofrequency is one of the safest non-invasive technologies for anti-ageing available in the industry, and a popular choice amongst men in the 30s to 50s where sagging of the skin starts to appear.
