Choosing the perfect facial for you

We are lucky to have numerous options for facials on our doorstep; all different, tailored to different skin types, goals and desires.   A thoroughly relaxing experience which enables you to fit in 30 minutes or an hour to switch off.  There is a massive choice of clinics and facials which often creates confusion and a dilema over choosing the perfect facial for you and your skin!  Here we unravel how to make the best decision for the type of facial and choice of clinic.

FIRST OF ALL, DO YOU KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE?

Understanding your skin type is key to the success of your facial. A qualified skincare professional can assess your skin type for you and make recommendations for suitable products for you to use in your daily skincare routine, which can make a significant difference when choosing the right facial for you.

WHAT IS MY SKIN TYPE?

You can start at home by washing your face with a gentle cleanser, then pat dry with a soft towel. Wait 30 minutes, then look in the mirror. If your skin appears shiny, you most likely have oily skin, if it is flaky, rough or tight-feeling, your skin is dry. It is also possible to have combination skin, and skin that is sensitive to the external environment and appears red when touched, so a more gentle skincare routine is needed.

DIFFERENT SKIN TYPES AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS

Normal Skin Characteristics:

  • Well-balanced in oil and moisture

  • Few imperfections

  • Small pores

  • Soft, smooth texture

  • Good elasticity

Dry Skin Characteristics:

  • Lacks adequate moisture and natural oils

  • Feels tight or rough

  • Dull appearance

  • Prone to flaking, itching, and sensitivity

  • Fine lines and wrinkles may be more pronounced due to dryness

Oily Skin Characteristics:

  • Overproduction of sebum, skin’s natural oil

  • Shiny appearance, especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin)

  • Larger, more visible pores

  • Prone to blackheads, whiteheads, and acne

Sensitive Skin Characteristics:

  • Has both oily and dry areas of the skin

  • Prone to redness, irritation, or inflammation

  • Can easily react to certain skincare products, weather changes, or other environmental factors

  • Often experiences itching, burning, or dryness

Combination Skin Characteristics:

  • A mix of oily and dry areas, with the T-zone typically oily and cheeks drier

  • Pore size varies, often larger in the T-zone

  • May experience both breakouts and dry patches

Aging or Mature Skin:

Not a type on its own but an important factor to consider. Mature skin often has less collagen, elasticity, and hydration, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging.

Acne-Prone Skin:

This can apply to any skin type, though it’s more common with oily and combination skin. Acne-prone skin benefits from ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide and requires careful product selection to avoid irritation

DETERMINE YOUR SKINS GOALS

So you’ve identified your skin type, now lets look at your skin goals? Do you have an event coming up and you really need to glow? Perhaps you have been on holiday and your skin is dehydrated and clogged with sun tan lotion? Or you’re skin is starting to sag through ageing, and you are looking for some advanced techniques such as skin tightening?

Most good clinics will tailor a facial to your specific skin type and skin goals. Here are some of the most common skin concerns, skin goals and the types of facials that will best address them:

Hydration and Glow: Look for facials that focus on hydration with high quality products and techniques to bring out the glow of your skin. Especially f you have dull or dry skin, hydrating facials that include nourishing masks, exfoliation, serums, and ingredients like hyaluronic acid will boost moisture content in your skin.

Acne and Breakouts: If you struggle with acne-prone skin, there are plenty of facials that focus on calming the skin and help to clear your acne breakouts, particularly with a course of facials like Hydrafacial. These facials will incorporate exfoliation, extraction, and anti-bacterial treatments to improve the appearance and condition of the skin.

Anti-Ageing and Firming: A popular concern for many as we age, we look for facials that help to give us a more youthful appearance and give the skin a hydration boost. For concerns around fine lines, wrinkles, or skin laxity, anti-aging facials with peptides, antioxidants, and firming ingredients may be beneficial. Ask your clinic for add-ons that focus on the eye area – believe the difference!

Sensitivity and Redness: If your skin is sensitive, look for a facial that uses gentle, calming ingredients like chamomile or aloe vera, and avoid treatments with harsh chemicals, as it will only accentuate the redness.

If you know what you want to achieve out of your facial, you can do some research and communicate this with your chosen practitioner, helping them tailor your facial to maximize results for you and your skin.

LOOK FOR HIGH QUALITY PRODUCTS AND INGREDIENT?

The products used in your facial have a significant impact on your skin quality, your experience and the results. High-quality facials often feature professional-grade skincare products with active ingredients tailored to your skin’s needs. The majority of clinics that provide more advanced facials will use high quality clinic-only products, and they will recommend some products that will suit your skin type to continue the process at home.

SOME INGREDIENTS TO LOOK FOR, AND AVOID:

Look for active ingredients in a facial like Vitamin C (for brightening), hyaluronic acid (for hydration), salicylic acid (for acne), or peptides (for anti-aging).

Choose natural and safe Ingredients. Avoid facials with fragrances, harsh chemicals, or fillers, especially if you have sensitive skin. Always ask your practitioner for a list of ingredients to ensure you are receiving the right treatment and products.

Good facials will offer customizable skincare products and treatments that suit your skin type. So don’t be shy to bring this up in your consultation. If you are paying for this service, then ask!

WHAT STEPS ARE INCLUDED IN YOUR PERFECT FACIAL?

A high quality, comprehensive facial typically includes several key steps. Understanding what’s involved can help you pick a facial that’s thorough, effective, relaxing and right for your skin.

Always look out for deep cleansing and exfoliation: These are essential to removing impurities and dead skin cells, allowing other products to penetrate more effectively, however, remember to look for gentle exfoliants, and exfoliation techniques, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Extractions are needed for those little blackheads and especially where clogged pores are a concern, your face will be transformed with good extraction technique. A skilled aesthetician can safely remove impurities during extraction without damaging your skin. If extractions are part of your facial, it’s essential to discuss this with your aesthetician beforehand as they can be uncomfortable and may cause slight redness afterward, but they’re highly effective for clearing pores and reducing breakouts when done correctly. You may want to skip extractions if you have very sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Mask or peel application will help rid the skin of dead cells and deliver specific nutrients to your skin, depending on your skin concerns and skin type. Quality facials will typically use a mask or peel type, whether for hydration, brightening, or calming. This process will most likely leave your skin a little red, but it will calm after a few hours.

Choose a facial with a high quality skincare serum and moisturizer application to finish. High potency moisturizers that seal in the treatment benefits will keep your skin glowing long after the facial.

Specialised facials like Hydrafacial use more advanced techniques such as LED light therapy and radiofrequency (RF) which can be highly effective. LED light therapy has a myriad of benefits including reducing wrinkles and fine lines, reducing inflammation, dark spots and acne. Radiofrequency works to tighten the skin by boosting collagen and elastin production.

If you have the budget for one of these facials, you will reap some amazing benefits, particularly if you take a course of facials over a few months.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT CLINIC FOR YOUR FACIAL

You may already have an idea of the clinic you would like to go to for your facial. However, is it right for your skin and your skin goals? Armed with the knowledge checklist in this blog, you will make an informed decision, however, also consider the following:

Is the environment relaxing and calm? A soothing environment helps you relax and makes the facial feel more luxurious. Clinics with low lighting, soft music, and calming aromatic scents often provide a more enjoyable experience.
Does the clinic have a nice ambiance and high cleanliness? A clean, welcoming environment is important for both relaxation and hygiene. Look for sanitized equipment: Tools should be disinfected between clients, and the aesthetician should practice good hygiene, including washing hands and wearing gloves if necessary.

DO’S AND DONT’S OF HAVING A FACIAL

Helping you get the best out of your facial – avoid the following:

  • Picking, squeezing or touching the treated areas

  • The temptation to apply make-up for 6-12 hours where possible

  • Applying other exfoliating skincare products for 48 hours after treatment

  • No other facial skincare treatments within 48 hours

  • Sunbathing or sunbeds for 48 hours after treatment

  • Do – Book around 5-7 days before a big event in case of reactions! – If you’ve received your perfect facial however, the reactions are very unlikely!

Above all, it comes down to cost. Your budget may range from £30 to £200, and there are many facials to choose from in the price range. Look at a facial you can have regularly as part of your skincare routine – your skin will thank you!
